Tucked away in the picturesque landscapes of Hokkaido, Japan, Kitoushi no Mori Kitoron by Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) is a hot spring resort that provides a tranquil vista overlooking Higashikawa town. Perched atop a hill, the structure is situated alongside the KKAA Hokkaido Satellite Office, holding a symbolic place in the heart of Hokkaido, sharing the same grassy plains. Built with larch sourced from Hokkaido’s forests, the structure seamlessly integrates into the natural environment, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. Inside, locally sourced birch wood embraces visitors, paying homage to the region’s abundant resources, while skilled woodworkers from Higashikawa contribute their craftsmanship, fashioning furniture from the same birch wood used in the interiors.

Integration of Local Materials and Craftsmanship

Kengo Kuma‘s project highlights the integration of local materials, skilled craftsmanship, and the environment. It offers visitors a peaceful escape to enjoy Hokkaido’s scenic views while embracing the simplicity of architecture that complements the natural surroundings seamlessly. One of the resort’s standout features is the amphitheater deck, integrated into the structure’s design. Its refined curves mirror the sharp apex of the roof, creating an organic union with the Daisetsuzan peaks that stand nearby. This offers a serene spot for guests to take in the surrounding views allowing them to unwind and appreciate the beauty of the landscape.
